Review: Derma E Skin Detox!

Uhh wow, hello there, middle (ish) of March. o_O 2017 is FLYING.

After all the traveling we’ve been doing, my skin has been in dire need of some epic TLC. So much flying dries a person out, who knew? It also probably doesn’t help that I hadn’t been drinking nearly as much water as a person is supposed to. I’m working on that though. So far for the month of March I’ve consumed at least 96oz of water a day (with 1 exception.) I can’t say I’ve noticed much of a difference 9 days in other than going to the restroom way more often than I’m used to, but I’m sure my body is appreciating the hydration.

dryer than a desert! 😉

Anyway. My skin. Not the happiest it’s ever been. Enter: 2 new charcoal-based products from Derma E; a detox scrub, and a purifying mask. The star ingredient, Activated Charcoal, known for absorbing 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, helping to remove toxins from the skin’s surface. And lemme tell ya, my skin hasn’t been happier in a long time! Although my face has never been acne-prone,  I haven’t had any super annoying surprise pimples pop up either, so that’s a definite win. I’ve been using the scrub and the mask a couple of times a week, and despite the tubes being fairly small, they’ve lasted a surprisingly long time! (That said, they’re sadly almost empty now, but I plan on repurchasing.) Time to get into the nitty gritty. (Heh, gritty. Like the charcoal in the mask. Get it?) Oy, it’s been a long week.

Mask: I still put a moisturizer on after using the mask, but it doesn’t dry my face out nearly as much as other (similar) masks I’ve tried in the past. It has little exfoliate bits, doesn’t smell weird, and I’m pretty sure I’m able to see where the mask pulled out impurities on the dried mask. Maybe that’s just what I’m telling myself, the world will never know. It definitely seems to be helping my skin balance out though, especially after all of the traveling we did at the beginning of the year. The only real negative I can come up with is that the mask seemed to dry up a bit in the tube – but not to the point of being unusable.

Scrub: I love exfoliating face washes, especially when the exfoliate bits aren’t too harsh.  I’m looking at you, St. Ives. This scrub is gentle enough to use every day, but also scrubby enough that I can actually feel it doing its job. I love that the scrub doesn’t dry out my face, and that my skin looks and feels bright and fresh after using it. I’ve also been using it on my back and chest for a little extra detox action. My only real (non-complaint) complaint is that the cap is hard to open, but I’ve just been unscrewing the entire thing which is good enough for me!

I really can’t say enough about the charcoal detox line from Derma E.  Both products haven’t caused my semi-sensitive skin any problems, and the products have been allergy-tested – so if skin sensitivity has been an issue for you in the past, it might be worth giving these products a whirl! Derma E is also 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten free, GMO-free. It really doesn’t get much better than that. (Actually yes, it does. The mask is only 1.7oz, which meant I was able to bring it to Disney World! Everything is better in Disney, even masks.)

You can find Derma E’s detox line on their website and at Ulta; let me know what you think if you try them out!!

Bachelor Casting – pt. 2

Let’s get right into the swing of things! (But in case you missed part 1, you can find it here!)

Danielle M. She kind of looks like Scarlett Johansson (and yes, I had to google the spelling of Scarlett’s name.) I like her already! And it looks like we’re starting round 2 on a good note; no mention of dolphins anywhere in her questionnaire! …oh. Sad. Found this season’s sob story. Her fiancé passed away. She’s also not as young as a lot of the other girls; I think she’ll end up going pretty far!

Dominique. One of her favorite movies is Titanic, which is another recurring answer. I can’t say I would list that in even my top 10. To each their own, I suppose. (Well, to each the same as at least half of the other girls, but you get the point.) She also mentions Chipotle burritos multiple times, and that’s totally something I can get behind.

Elizabeth. Okay, she has (Liz) next to her name. Why not just go by Liz in the Bio then? Especially if that’s what she’ll go by on the show. I don’t get it. Huh. And she’s a doula! I’m sure they’ll make a big deal about that, since she’s not a model, RN, or small business owner. (Am I the only one having flashbacks to ED specialist, Evan?) YES. Liz is the realest of the real so far. She admitted to picking her nose while in her car and being a Belieber. You do you, Liz.

Elizabeth. Ah, now I understand why Elizabeth #1 is going by Liz. It all makes sense. “Where do you meet guys? … I’d prefer to meet through mutual friends or in front of millions of weekly viewers. :)” So good. She knows how absurd the whole premise of this show is. Hmm she also has misophonia, or the fear of sound. (More specifically, “ a condition in which negative emotions, thoughts, and physical reactions are triggered by specific sounds.”) Interesting. I’m sure the producers won’t play that up at all.

Hailey. Can we just pause for a second to think about all of the different ways people spell the name Hailey? Too many. Ooh, she’s Canadian. Think they’ll play it up as much as they did Daniel? Probably. She loves 90s Sheryl Crow. Ya know, she totally looks like she’d love 90s music. In fact, she kind of looks like she’s just straight out of the 90s. “Only children are strange.” Well – tell us how ya really feel, Hailey! Hah. I don’t think she’s going to last too long. (I don’t have any reasoning behind that.)

I’m kind of bored by this middle group of girls. As hilariously un-diverse as the dolphin gang was, at least they had interesting answers! I’m a little bored. But I’ll keep on keepin’ on – full steam ahead!

Ida Marie. I can’t decide if I like Ida Marie’s shirt of not. On the one hand, I think it’s pretty unique and something I’d like to wear. But on the other hand…it kind of looks like you could make it for $3. The world may never know. I also half expected her to be ex-Mormon or ex-Amish. Sorry for making judgements on your name, Ida Marie!

What is your favorite all-time book and why?: I need to read more books.

Who is your favorite author?: Again, I need to read more books.

I wonder if these questionnaires consist of like…25 questions, and the producers just choose the most interesting answers. Oh jeebus. If Ida Marie could be any fruit, she would be a strawberry because “they are sexual and taste great with wine.” Just…no.

Jaimi. She has a “symbol of her initials” as a tattoo. Does that just mean…her initials? She also can apparently bench press men with her legs. That’s what she’d do to impress a guy. Wouldn’t that just be a leg press? Details. I wonder if she’s actually done that, or only leg pressed the weight of what she thinks a guy would weigh. Ohhh oh oh. I hope she leg presses Nick during her limo exit/introduction. That would be hilarious. Annd nope, she lost me. She is a “Pesco-pollo-lacto-ovo-paro-tarian.” Is it really easier to say that than “I eat fish, birds, and animal byproducts like milk” ?!?

Also, I’m only HALF WAY through the list of girls. This is absurd. I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Oh, but it’s after 5 now. Time to pour a glass of wine. But really. Only half way. Why so many!?

Jasmine B. If I had nothing else to do in my day to day life (and wasn’t married, or attached to anyone in any way) I would be a flight attendant like Jasmine B. I would probably be a little bit miserable – so many grumpy people – but just think of all the places you’d get to visit! Annnnd her favorite author is Steve Harvey. Really?! There are so many great authors out there and you choose this guy.

Jasmine G. Jasmine has a tattoo on her inner lip. If my reading comprehension is on point, it’s a sorority tattoo. Dear sister, I greatly appreciate you not getting your letters tattooed on the inside of your mouth. Unless there’s something I’m unaware of. Annnnd apparently we’re starting a new trend, at least with the Jasmines; admiring people that probably shouldn’t be admired. She would like to be Guy Fieri for a day. Alton Brown, Anthony Bourdain, Michael Symon…..if you’d like to be a chef for a day, there are WAY better choices. A lot of people also would like to be Olivia Pope from Scandal. I’ve never seen it, but I guess she’s pretty BA?

Josephine. Josephine’s occupation is “Unemployed Nurse.” At that point wouldn’t you just pick something like “Dog Walker” or “Aspiring Dolphin Trainer”? I would. Unless she’s hoping to get a job out of this, in which case – good luck, chica. Oh. And she’s not 5’7″, not 5’7.5″, but 5′7.75“. That .75” is super important, obviously. Omg. Okay. So when I first saw her picture, I thought ‘Jew nose‘ to myself, but wasn’t going to type it since that’s a little mean. But she IS Jewish! So I feel a little less bad.

Kristina. Well. Shoot. Kristina’s bio got heavy reeeeal fast. She’d like to know if her biological mother thinks choosing alcohol over her kids was worth it. Womp. Ohmygosh, and a fictional character that isn’t a Disney character! Kristina is an individual! 😛 (She would like to be Fiona from Shrek, in case you were wondering.)

Lacey. Lucky (?) number 20! Okay and I like her already. She would eat a meal with Shakespeare, JK Rowling, and Joe Jonas. That is quite an excellent selection of people. Wow. And she has 2 degrees and knows Arabic. You’re too good for this show, Lacey!! Well, everyone is, really. But especially you! I can’t decide if I want her to do well because she’s awesome, or if I want her to get out early so she can do something more with her life. We shall see!

Annnd with that, we have 10 more girls to go! That will have to wait for another day. This is hard work! 😛

Happy Monday – 9/12

cat gif
It’s been a rough (read: long) couple of weeks at work. This is literally the only thing of substance on my phone from the last 7 days. Hi Barb!

When I decided to do a “Happy Monday” post, I had initially intended for it to be like…happy things in the news. Clearly it’s more of a “here are personal things for me to be happy about” – but hey, whatever gets me through the week, right? Maybe I’ll slowly try to start a more generic look at these happy things out in the world angle. Thoughts? Comment and let me know! In the meantime, on with regularly scheduled programming.

  1. Friday = new phone day! Here’s hoping it survives a weekend without a case. Unless Casetify ships my new one reeeeal soon.
  2. Friends are visiting this weekend! To be quite honest I had completely forgotten about that discussion we had, but I’m looking forward to an opportunity to show off our new house! Even if we don’t quiiiite have all of the furniture yet. That’s okay 🙂
  3. Old houses come with problems – that’s a given. Luckily we’re going to start the process of getting all that taken care of tomorrow morning! Helloooo 6:30am wake-up call.
  4. Our Morocco trip is officially paid off! (We had previously only paid the deposit.) 108 days to go! (15 and a half ish weeks, in case you were wondering.)
  5. Only a few hours (?) until the rest of the iPhone-owning world has iOS 10! I’ve had the beta version for maybe..2 months now? But there’s only so much fun I can have with it on my own. Here’s to fun iMessages with my friends 😉

Oy. Time to finish some logo-work and hit the hay. Happy Monday, y’all!

Happy Monday! 8/15

Well shoot, it’s been a while since I posted something of substance, eh? Moving + Disney + unpacking + freelance + regular work takes a lot out of a person! No complaints though – I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I didn’t keep busy.

  1. Friday over lunch I decided we had to tear up the carpet on our stairs. I’m pretty sure the previous owners’ dog slept there every night, so the stairwell just reeked. The stairs will definitely need to be refinished at some point but I’m just happy to not have stinky stairs anymore 😀
  2. After buying all of the painting supplies to redo our porch floor, we…decided to tile it instead. So far we’ve cleaned the porch and put down a moisture barrier, and today after work we’ll be smoothing out the concrete with some mortar (it’s in really bad shape right now.) There’s a good chance we’re biting off a bit more than we can chew, but it’ll get done!
  3. I did a few blind taste tests with Vökin, Grey Goose, and Ketel One with friends and Joe over the weekend, and they all chose Vökin as the best one – so that’s promising! Hooray for *officially* having good product!
  4. One of my friends is visiting this weekend! We have grand plans of building porch furniture and sitting on the porch for hours upon hours, so hopefully Joe and I are able to get the floor finished before he leaves for a conference Wednesday night.
  5. Even though it was already a week ago, I’m putting our Disney trip into my happy things, because..duh. Disney. We took a whopping 274 Photopass pictures; when you’re paying a lot of money for Memory Maker (aka can download all of the photos) – you gotta take full advantage of every. single. photographer. on main street. Heh. Really though, we had such a great time, and are already looking forward to our next trip. Which will absolutely, certainly, without question be longer than 2.5 days:) (Well, 3, taking into account the Delta issues we ran into on Monday.) Look out for a full (mini) trip report in a week or so..once life settles down again!

Whew! Lots to catch up on. In addition to a Disney trip report, I’ll also be posting a couple of reviews sometime soon..yay for getting back into the swing of things!

Happy Monday – 6/27

I’m just going to get straight to it this week:

  1. We just put our last month of rent in the mail! Woop woop! Now we just have to hope that we’ll have somewhere to go at the end of July. Come onnnn, appraiser dude.
  2. Only 39 days until our Disney trip! A weekend in the happiest place on earth (or at least one of them) will be a welcome reprieve to all of this house-related stress. Also I’m introducing Joe to the wonders of Boma. Salivating just thinking about it right now, mmmm.
  3. Saturday afternoon was spent at our friends’ pool floating on flamingos and ice cream cones. We popped in to Five Below (for the first time ever) before heading over to swim – definitely some of the best purchases we could have made…even if the ice cream cone wasn’t particularly float and relax-friendly. 😛
  4. I have officially started my Christmas shopping! Yay for sales and planning ahead! I highly recommend it. But along with early shopping comes writing a list of what I’ve purchased (and making sure I keep track of said list,) because let’s be real, I’d forget all about  my purchases 6 months from now otherwise.
  5. Sample Vökin bottles have been printed! Very exciting. The owner is coming out this week to do dinner and discuss some small changes and adjustments that need to be made, but hooray for progress! Here’s hoping product finds its way to shelves soon!!

Sheesh, I started this post over lunch, and now it’s time to get ready for bed. Life is just too busy right now. Happy Monday!

Meet Barb!

Barbra Streisand.

Ba-Ba-Ba-Ba-Barbra Ann.

Or Barbie if you wish, but I think I reject that. She’s not a Barbie. There are so many better options; Barbecue and Barbra Streisand being personal favorites.

If you follow me on basically ANY form of social media (Snapchat followers got the brunt of it this past weekend,) you’ve probably learned by now that we rescued a 1 year old kitty named Barb (yes, we’re keeping her name) from the shelter on Saturday and we couldn’t be more excited! We’ve both already determined that while we’d be significantly more tired, a baby would probably be easier than introducing a cat to a new house. She flip flops between being incredibly mischievous and “omg wait I’ve actually suddenly decided that thing is terrifying,” but I suppose that’s to be expected.

Trying to get into our bedroom. She’s been successful twice when we didn’t close the door quite fast enough.
Felted catnip wine bottles are her current toy-of-choice.

Barb was 4 months pregnant when she was found outside and brought to the shelter on Halloween of 2015, so obviously we’re making up for her not so great start to life by spoiling the crap out of her! 🙂 So many toys, nose boops, probably too many treats, and as many pets as she can handle.

She’s scared of the TV (but slowly coming around with help from catnip and treats,) is really interested in going basically anywhere we don’t want her to go (our bedroom and the basement,) and pretty much flat out refuses to wear her super cute “Jedi in Training” collar, which she manages to chew off within 1 minute of us putting it on, without fail. She’s not a biter, and basically only takes her claws out to play with toys or knead a rug….though she did stick 3 claws directly into my underboob on Sunday. Joe said I made a very unique sound when it happened. It hurt.

Joe's been calling her a "pointer kitty" - she likes sitting with one paw up in the air.
Joe’s been calling her a “pointer kitty” – she likes sitting with one paw up in the air.

Anyway, she’s also recently discovered she can jump up onto the credenza (with some vintage German bar-ware, and a precariously stacked set of Uncle Goose blocks,) and that if she reaches her paw in just right, she can touch Poppy. Apparently Poppy’s spikes aren’t particularly threatening. We got a spray bottle at Target last night to try to avoid such mishaps.

I'm obsessed with this picture.
I’m obsessed with this picture.

When we aren’t home, she has full run of the spare room…we feel bad sectioning her off for now, but she gets lots of lovin’ when we’re around, and she has everything she needs – including a window looking right out at a bird feeder. Pretty good (temporary) set-up, I’d say.

We gave her free, unsupervised roam of the house for 10 minutes (Joe was going to trivia, I was coming home from Bent 9) and of course she decides to just chill in front of the TV she's scared of. Sigh.

Since I began writing this post (Monday afternoon) she’s gotten more and more comfortable with everything…the TV isn’t quite as scary anymore, and her feline tendencies are revealing themselves – poor BB-8 on a stick has already seen better days. We’ll probably fully kitty-proof the rest of our house by this weekend (see ya in a while, fancy German barware) – I think she’s begun going a little stir-crazy in the spare room/needs more space!

I had an early morning. She was making all sorts of noises.
I had an early morning. She was making all sorts of noises.

So…that’s Barb! Joe and I are both totally in love with her – crazy antics and all. I also think it should be mentioned that I’ve had Barbra Streisand by Duck Sauce stuck in my head since Saturday.

Bonus "me after 5 seconds in the kitty room" photo. Pure joy.

Happy Thoughts for a Monday.

Nobody likes Mondays, though I suppose today could be an exception for those of us who get to celebrate Labor Day with sleeping in and barbecues. Anyway, I’ve decided that every Monday I’m going to try to make a list of things that make me happy, or have made me happy over the past week! Here goes nothin’:

  1. 50% off at the Kate Spade outlet, which meant a new wallet for me!
  2. My mom’s co-worker traded cars with her for the weekend, allowing us to get our new couch to Kalamazoo in the bus. I mean Expedition.
  3. Living vicariously through my sister who got to go to Disney World this weekend. The jealousy is high.
  4. I got to go to Pure Barre on Saturday! Totally, without question, my happy place. And I’m still sore. But I got a cute PB branded Pura Vida bracelet so I can take my love for the barre back to Kzoo with me!
  5. The broken parts of our credenza were delivered! I’m beyond excited to finish building it and start filling it with everything that didn’t fit in our kitchen. Is this what married life is like!? 😛 I’m also looking forward to putting the wire triceratops on it that I got from the Fab warehouse sale this weekend (along with a lot of other things, including an 8×10 rug for our bedroom, all for under $300 shipped. Hooray Labor Day sales!)

Happy Monday, y’all!

New scarf from Ralph Lauren, and wallet from Kate Spade. Thank you outlet sales.
