Happy Monday!

I feel like I’ve been saying this every week lately, but HOW is it already Monday again? Even though it means a day of not getting paid, I’m super grateful for this day off, which so far has consisted of an extended brunch with some of my coworkers! I gotta say, that’s one of my favorite parts of Kalamazoo: that basically everyone is a transplant, and therefore everyone is always looking for more friends. It’s pretty great.

  1. Going off of that, I’m going over to one of Joe’s coworkers houses for the Bachelor tonight! I’m surprisingly not doing too terribly on my bracket, but (mini spoiler alert:) I’m glad I changed my mind from having LB win! Despite the fact that it’s freezing cold and has basically been snowing since we got home last night, I’m looking forward to tonight!
  2. I finally remembered to find a yoga mat to bring back to Kzoo – one that I got in a subscription box last year and has yet to be used – and it will get christened at Boatyard Brewing Co. tomorrow for their Beer Week/Yoga event! I’m excited, even if I wasn’t able to convince Joe to participate in the yoga part of the evening with me 😛
  3. Somehow 10 years have passed since High School Musical first aired (whaaaa!? That makes me feel so old) , and Disney Channel is airing a reunion special on Wednesday night at 8pm…and I’m so excited to watch! Thank goodness the Disney Channel app on Apple TV has a live option.
  4. We knocked a few things off our 2016 bucket list over the weekend (well, this 2016 bucket list doesn’t actually exist, but a few things we wanted to accomplish were accomplished): Going to the NAIAS in Detroit (like we do every year), seeing my friend Rachel and her fiancé’s new house, going to Whiskey Six (a new restaurant which was delish) and I had been craving food from Atwater in the Park for a few months now, and we went there for a super late dinner Friday night when we got in. So I’m a happy camper…with a very full belly.
  5. Joe and I checked with our landlady, and we’re allowed to get a cat! We both love animals, and while Poppy is a great lil hedgie, she’s not a ‘cuddle on the couch’ kind of pet, and a dog just wouldn’t be a good choice for us right now, SO we’ve been looking at kitties in the area to rescue. If all goes according to plan (aka we find a cat that is very snuggly) we’ll probably be getting a kitty cat this weekend and I’m super excited! …and also figuring out logistics of what should be cleaned up/organized before that happens 😛

Also, one more PSA because I’m really not sure what I’m doing: when I switched from my .wordpress.com blog to a self-hosted one, I lost all of my followers – so just check to make sure that you’re subscribed if you thought you were before but haven’t been getting updates!

Sometimes I buy baby things.

Let’s be real for a hot second: I bought a pair of shoes on my phone while drunk on Nicaraguan rum on our honeymoon. They were a good purchase though, and will be very useful next summer. I’ve also never forgotten to brush my teeth while inebriated, which is pretty admirable, if I may say so myself.

This is the only documentation of rum/shoe buying night. Thank goodness for strawberry banana smoothies and 1 cordoba cans of Pringles.
This is the only documentation of rum/shoe buying night. Thank goodness for strawberry banana smoothies and 1 cordoba cans of Pringles.

On an only partially related note: tonight, I bought over half of Gymboree’s 40% off unisex hedgehog collection.

In case you missed it – I have a small collection of unisex baby clothes (keeping it unisex is the only way to keep myself from buying every cute onesie that crosses my path), a medium-sized collection of potential potty training fodder (Tsum Tsums), and a large collection of children’s books. I like to be prepared, what can I say? Oh – I also have a pet hedgehog, which I suppose is important to know, for validation of this purchase.

But I mean really, how could I just ignore the existence of these amazing things? And yes, I bought two sizes of the socks.

On that note, I’m going to  finish this episode of America’s Next Top Model (season 9 has a girl from Valparaiso, Indiana – super awesome), and going to bed. Goodnight, loves.

PSA for my followers:

I recently switched over to a self-hosted WordPress blog – and while I don’t completely understand the logistics, you might have to re-click the follow button, even if my posts are still showing up in your reader.

That is all 🙂

Oh, and here’s a bonus photo from one of our walks recently:IMG_3635

2 Awards!

What?! I’ve only been blogging since August, and this past week I was nominated for two blogger awards! First,  The Versatile Blogger Award, from Stephellaneous, and second, The Liebster Award, from Be Free 2 Love! Muchas gracias <3

The Versatile Blogger Award asked for 7 facts, so here goes nothing:

  1. I have an albino hedgehog named Poppy. She’s 5.5 years old, which is about 90 in hedgehog years (hedgies are only ‘supposed’ to live 3-5 years.) She’s super grumpy 98% of the time, but I love her anyways!
  2. I’ve been an extra in a handful of movies/tv shows: LOL, 5 Year Engagement, Into the Storm, and Detroit 187 (I might be forgetting one.) I really like seeing how everything works behind the scenes and feeling like I’m a part of something important! It was also cool to tie my shoes next to Emily Blunt, and watch Miley Cyrus (fresh out of her Hannah Montana days) drop about 20 f-bombs when a bee was flying around her on set.
  3. Along those same lines, I was on an episode of My Strange Addiction on TLC! But no, not for having a strange addiction. After seeing Davecat on an episode of the show, I tweeted him on a whim, since I had been trying to figure out what to do for a photojournalism assignment. He ended up tweeting back, and we set up a date for me to come out for a photoshoot! About a week before I was set to go over to his apartment, he emailed me asking if it was okay for the TLC to come film us for the duration of our shoot – they were filming a “where are they now” segment. Of course I said yes 🙂 The day of the shoot the TLC crew was running SUPER late, so me, Davecat, and his sex doll wife Sidore watched The Life Acquatic – ya know, just normal things.Davecat
  4. In case you hadn’t caught on by now, I really like using parentheticals. And commas. And probably overuse both, but that’s okay. I also hate hate hate when people misuse to/too, their/there/they’re, and spell ‘definitely’ defiantly. Unless I really like you, misuse/misspelling any of those things = deal breakers and/or heavy judgement. And if we are close? I’ll be correcting you 24/7. Sorry not sorry, I can’t help myself 🙂
  5. I went to college for 7 years. I’m the oldest person in my group of art school friends, and oy. 7 years is just a long time. I started at Valparaiso University in Indiana, going to school for Elementary Education, but a mixture of homesickness (missing both Joe and my parents/home in general), realizing I’d really rather just take care of/teach my own kids as a parent rather than 30+ other people’s kids, and realizing after taking a few art for elementary teachers classes that I would rather go to art school, I applied and was admitted to CCS! I started there as a photography major, but a year later switched to a Graphic Design major with a minor in Photography. Hooray for indecision! Luckily I have zero regrets, and wouldn’t have nearly as many good friends if I didn’t take the path I did.Graduation!
  6. I’m a very messy, unorganized person when it comes to clothes and tabletops, but when I have to plan something (a wedding, vacation, people visiting…) a switch flips in my brain, and I turn into the most well-organized, detail oriented person in the world. I don’t get it, and I wish I could keep my life uncluttered all the time, but alas.
  7. I love bad TV. And good TV. Okay, I just like TV. I have the TV on way more than I probably should, but 99% of the time it’s just on as background noise while I work. Some must-sees for me include: The Bachelor(ette), American Horror Story, Once Upon a Time, Gotham, and Intervention. I’ve recently started watching Scream Queens, and after realizing Hulu has every season of America’s Next Top Model, I’ve been putting that on while I work on freelance things. Netflix is also great for Orange is the New Black, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s a good thing Joe and I try to stay relatively active/eat relatively healthy, otherwise I’d definitely fall under the category of a couch potato.

Whew. That was a lot of long-winded facts. Congratulations for making it through! Now for some nominations and rules: Continue reading “2 Awards!”

happy monday!

Well. The Mac and Cheese Disaster of 2015 was not avoided. The crockpot basically turned the mac and cheese into a big vat of yellow play-doh, and I ended up waking Joe up at 2:45am…there was no way he was taking that blob of starch in to work. We ended up making 4 boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese at 3am. It’s not going to win any awards, but at least his coworkers will be fed! Maybe we’ll try out the whole ‘crockpot mac and cheese’ thing again some day.

Kraft to the rescue!
Kraft to the rescue!

On to happy things!

  1. I just got back from Kalamazoo Barre, and although I’m a little underwhelmed (it was apparently a hard class…but was on the easier side for me) I’ll definitely be going back/making a habit of going! It’ll be nice to incorporate it back into my daily (?) routine…but I’m currently in the process of purchasing seat and ab intensive Pure Barre class DVDs from PBs website. I feel like my thighs got an excellent workout at Kalamazoo Barre, but abs and seat left something to be desired. Luckily our basement is barre-workout ready, and I can fill in the gaps on my own!
  2. So many things to review! If you know me, you know that there’s always been a pretty constant flow of free things being delivered. Welp, starting a blog has apparently doubled that (not sure if it’s just a coincidence or the two are correlated.) In the coming weeks I’ll be reviewing an eye cream and nighttime face moisturizer on my blog (thanks to BrandBacker) and from the variety of other sample/review sites I’m part of I’ll be getting (or have recently received): OB Tampons, GoodnessKnows snack squares, Seventh Generation laundry detergent, Robutussin, Vitafusion Womens gummies, Accuflora, TAZO chai tea, Pagoda snacks, annnnd Johnsonville Breakfast Sausage. Holy moley. Hooray for Crowdtap, Smiley360, and BzzAgent!
  3. Last week I was awarded two blogger awards that I need to follow up on – and might combine the two. They both include writing up some fun facts about myself. Luckily I’m full of those!
  4. I brought all of my fall-friendly boots to Kalamazoo! It was getting a little old wearing my knockoff Birkenstocks or Sperrys in the chilly weather. As sad as I am that summer is officially over, I do love my boots and scarves 🙂
  5. We are (hopefully) having a pumpkin carving party with some of Joe’s coworkers this weekend – we have a bit of cleaning to do to prepare for that, but it should be fun if all goes according to plan! We’re not quite sure if anyone is free, so it might end up being just the two of us. Regardless, yay pumpkin carving!
  6. Bonus entry! It looks like my website is officially moved over to being self-hosted (vs WordPress hosted.) I’m not exactly sure what that means for anyone following my blog, but it’s certainly exciting for me! 🙂

Happy Monday, y’all!

PS: The giveaway I’m running ends tomorrow night! Be sure to enter if you haven’t already 🙂

Heyyy, it’s a giveaway!

I recently received Goodness Knows Snack Squares AND OB Tampons to test/review for free from Smiley360, and what better way to share some freebies than with a giveaway!? Free tampons and BOGO snack bars might not be the most exciting first giveaway, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right?

After the boxes were delivered, I dug right into one of the bars (Very Cranberry) and devoured it so quickly – it was delicious, and at least slightly more healthy than the Halloween candy I’ve already started snacking on. Our poor trick or treaters will probably only get to choose from tropical or original Starbursts by October 31st.

The tampons on the other hand – I just can’t wrap my head around the idea of a tampon without an applicator. I have a box in the closet for emergencies, but the samples will be heading to a friend or two that will actually put them to proper use! A lot of people I know love OB, and I can appreciate that they’re small and easier to transport to and from the restroom, but I just can’t get on board (except for that one time I ran out of tampons in Cape Town right before 22 hours on a plane, and accidentally bought the applicator-free variety from the store, and got me through the flight without any mishaps.)

Anyway – on to the giveaway! It’s open to US readers only (so sorry) and each winner (there will be 2) will get one coupon for a free box of OB tampons (up to $8.99) and two BOGO coupons for the Goodness Knows snack squares, which can be found at Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid.

To enter: Just post a comment on this post with any product you’ve come across lately that you’ve loved! For an extra entry, follow my blog and let me know you followed in another comment.

The giveaway will end at 11:59pm ET, October 20th.

This giveaway is now closed. Sorry! Hopefully there will be another in the near future 🙂

Congratulations to the winners: Amanda, and Tari L.

Hopefully my next giveaway will be a bit more exciting, but in the meantime, good luck:)

happy thoughts for a monday

  1. A new computer! I’ve had hand-me-down MacBook Pros throughout the duration of my Graphic Design ‘career’ which worked out pretty well, despite some fixable issues and general slowness. But holy moley – everything is so fast now! I want to open Illustrator? Less than 10 seconds later, I’m adjusting invoices or playing around with color choices for a freelance project. It’s lovely. Trying to decide if I want to desecrate it with stickers now.
  2. The Super Moon! Blood Moon? Whatever it was technically called – it was awesome, and especially awesome to just stand in our front yard with Joe for a bit and enjoy it together (and subsequently start looking into how expensive telescopes are.) It was also nice to think that during the next supermoon eclipse (2033) we’ll probably be sharing the same experience with our 13ish year old child. Sorry, is that weird? Maybe that’s a little weird. Oh well. Blood Moon Drawing
  3. Freelance! I’ve been incredibly busy with freelancing – which although it’s been keeping me from working on organizing the house as much as would be ideal, I’m super grateful that companies on the other side of the state are willing to work with me. The distillery man asked if I could attend a gallery opening on Thursday (in Metro Detroit) to introduce me to some people I’ll be working with throughout the duration of my time with the company, so that should be fun — and I can stop at IKEA for hangers on my way back Friday morning, woohoo!
  4. I finally got around to framing 3 prints that I got during De Program in The Netherlands. Narrowing it down to 3 was hard, but hooray for introducing a bit of Dutch design to our house 🙂
  5. Yesterday Joe and I went over to a friend’s newly acquired house who needed help moving an organ. It was super heavy, so rather than watching them potentially hurt themselves moving it to the curb, I suggested/offered to put it up on Craigslist/Reddit to see if anyone wanted it. The friend wasn’t too convinced that my solution would be successful, but lo and behold, it was picked up within 6 hours, with 3 other people interested in it. Bwahaha. Hooray for a perfectly working (albeit dirty) organ not going to waste!

Happy Monday! 🙂

happy thoughts for a monday

Geez, doing this once a week makes each week seem like time is flying.

  1. We slept in our new bed for the first time last night! Hooray for a non-IKEA mattress (though we want to get a poofier mattress topper) and matching bedroom set! It was lovely. New Bed
  2. I’ve had a lot of freelance work! It has been keeping me super super busy, but no complaints…gotta pay for our Disney trip! 😉
  3. There are baby squirrels and chipmunks running around on the fence and tree I can see from the couch (where I’ve been working until we get our studio set up upstairs.) They’re adorable, and make me wish I was a princess so I could convince them to clean the shower for me like in Enchanted. Really though, they are super fun to watch!
  4. House guests! We’re having a lot of friends over from the other side of the state the first weekend of October which we’re looking forward to – plus it’s providing the push we need to work on getting everything organized, stored away, and looking pretty! 12 days and counting!
  5. We got all of our wedding photos on Friday, and oh my goodness they’re all so perfect. I spent a huge majority of last night working on a 10×10 book with lots of favorite photos (narrowing down from 974) – hopefully the books (we ordered 4) do the photos justice – I’m mildly worried about the print quality, but I’ll hope for the best! So exciting 🙂RingsMakeupYou May Now Kiss the Bride!Mustang Lovin'

it all led up to this!

If you had asked me this time last year if I had planned on designing my wedding invitations, you would have gotten an answer something along the lines of “I mean…as a graphic designer I know I totally should, but I just don’t think I want that much pressure!”

However, at some point between last summer and early winter, I did a complete 180, and decided to take on designing not only our invitation suite, but literally every single other piece of printed material one could possibly need:

  • escort cards
  • personalized place cards
  • bridal party (day of) schedules
  • reception schedule
  • photographer’s shot list
  • save the dates
  • thank you notes
  • little notebooks
  • stickers
  • programs
  • rehearsal dinner invites
  • rehearsal dinner table decor
  • tags for wedding favors
  • 3 wedding/bridal shower invitations
  • games for one wedding shower
  • open bar sign
  • guest book sign
  • out of town guest welcome booklets
  • welcome bags
  • parts of all thank you gifts for family/bridal party

So yeah, I went overboard. Once I got started I just couldn’t stop, but it was all SO worth it. Many guests at the reception told me they loved that I paid attention to the smallest of details; whether it was hand signing the programs, writing a special note on their place cards, or using my Cricut (a gift from the DIY gods, I swear) to cut out 160 mini Vermonts that were strung onto the favors.

When I would tell people about what I was working on, they’d be shocked that I wasn’t using a wedding planner, and without fail, ask if I had a Type A personality. Surprisingly up until all of the wedding related shenanigans, I would’ve labeled myself as almost completely Type B…the wedding clearly brought out the super organized, detail-oriented side of me, and I’m not complaining! Hopefully the Type A side will continue to be present as I pack up my life in Grosse Pointe and move to Kalamazoo…

Anyway. This post has all been a build up to a few wedding photos! If you’ve come to my blog from Facebook, you’ve probably already seen these, but they’re seriously so perfect, they’re worth seeing again! As I continue to post, I’ll dive deeper into some of my projects – for now, a few strictly from our big day!

so we got married…now what!?

I’ve been wanting to start a blog for a few months now, and what better time than two weeks post-wedding? I’m still technically living in my parent’s house, and have spent the 3 days since arriving home from our honeymoon laying on the couch hopped up on Dayquil and Nyquil – thank you airplane germs – rather than packing up everything I have acquired over my 25 years of life. Oy.

Anyway. I posted a list of things I want to accomplish over the next few weeks on Facebook the other day, and starting a blog was near the top (along with figuring out what capsule wardrobes are all about, packing to move to Kalamazoo, and writing an unimaginable amount of thank you notes.) I’ve always liked writing, and between graduating from college, getting married (read: planning basically the entire wedding with lots of DIY projects, as well as letting out my previously undiscovered Type A personality), and moving to a new/house with Joe, there should be a lot to write about. So, here goes nothing!

PS. I’ll post a handful of wedding/honeymoon to Nicaragua photos in the next couple of days, but here’s one for now!
